The Older Adult Knowledge Network (Oaknet) is a website of the Legal Resource Centre of Alberta Ltd. (LRC).
The LRC is a not for profit company which was incorporated provincially in 1975. Its mandate is “to contribute to, advance and promote the legal knowledge and education of the people of Canada.” It was registered as a charity in 1977 and subscribes to Imagine Canada’s Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code
The LRC’s mission is to enhance the accessibility and quality of justice realized in Canada. It addresses its mission by creating learning opportunities and building learning communities that facilitate the creation, management, exchange, and integration of knowledge among people within the justice system and between them and the general public
Law plays an essential role in the maintenance of a democracy. It is a bulwark against tyranny and a mechanism for advancing the cause of justice. Public legal education is, therefore, fundamentally, citizenship education that ensures that the public understands and supports the rule of law, makes effective use of the justice system, and engages effectively in ensuring the system meets the changing needs of society.
