Elder abuse can take many forms. An older adult may experience more than one form of abuse.

This section reviews each of the main types of elder abuse:

Visit the Stories of Abuse page for examples of abuse and what steps can be taken.

What about abuse in a care facility or institution?

All types of abuse can take place in a care facility or institution by a caregiver or other staff member.  A starting point may be to report the abuse to the manager or owner of the residence. If that does not help, you have to look elsewhere for help.

Alberta’s Protection for Persons in Care office investigates reports of abuse involving adults who receive care in publicly-funded care or support services. The Protection for Persons in Care Act also requires service providers to take reasonable steps to protect persons in their care from abuse.
